Personalized Web Settings using JAWS

When JAWS is used with Internet Explorer, forms mode is switched off automatically when you move from one Web page to another. When you return to the Web page, where you had turned on forms mode, JAWS will turn on forms mode automatically.

JAWS 5.0 also provides a list of all the form fields on a Web page, by pressing Insert + F5. You can scroll the list using the arrow keys or use the alphabets to select an option. By pressing Enter the focus moves to the selected form field and forms mode is turned on.

CUSTOM LABELS

Browsing the Internet has become an essential part of our day-to-day life. While browsing the net, you may come across Web pages that are difficult to access. In such pages, you may find HTML elements with inappropriate names or no names at all.

At that time, you may ask for someone's assistance for understanding the purpose of those elements. You may also feel that you can assign appropriate labels for these elements for future references.

JAWS 6.0 allows you to assign custom text labels to HTML elements such as text links, buttons, images, graphic links, and form fields. These elements can be accessed using the Tab key. Custom labels is useful feature that enables you to customize the Web pages to suit your requirement.

JAWS reads the custom labels provided to identify the HTML elements. In addition, JAWS reads the custom label when the elements appear in the form of a list. Assigning custom labels is very helpful for Web pages that contain unlabelled form fields or inappropriate link titles.

Custom labels are saved with the .jsi extension. JAWS saves the custom labels and uses them every time the user visits a Web page under the same domain.

To assign custom labels for HTML elements:

  1. Open a Web page.
  2. Select the HTML element, for which custom label needs to be assigned or modified.
  3. Press Insert + F2 to open the Run JAWS Manager dialog box.
  4. Select the Custom Label option from the list and press Enter. The Custom Label dialog box appears.

    Tip

Press Control + Insert + Tab to open the Custom Label dialog box.

  5. Type the text to be assigned as custom label and press Enter.
